WISE: When did you first get in the smartphone repair business?
JM: Our store originally focused on buying, selling, and repairing Apple computers. We noticed how much business we were turning down by referring phone repairs elsewhere. So, we found a supplier, ordered some parts, and the rest is history.
What did you do before this venture?
I have a history working in the restaurant business. Customer service was important, and it translated very well when dealing with customers early on.
What do you like to do in your free time when you can escape the business?
I’m a novice bladesmith, enjoying my time in the forge whenever I can. Aside from that, I’m always finding new projects to start around my house. My most recent project is building a custom bar – with zero woodworking experience, of course.
Where do you seek inspiration to grow your business?
When manufacturers try to find ways of keeping individuals or third parties from accessing or repairing devices, it drives us to find creative solutions and tools that give our customers more than one option. Other than that, our customers drive our inspiration. Because we’re on a personal level with so many of our customers, we try our best to listen to their feedback and adapt our business to what their needs are.
When the world returns to some kind of normal, what do you look forward to doing that you haven’t been able to do because of the pandemic?
Shake my customers’ hands! We’ve done some pretty awesome things, like repairing phones that have been dropped in water and recovering baby photos that were thought to be lost. I’ve had customers break down in tears of joy, and others jump up with excitement. It’s my hope that hugs, high fives, and handshakes come back sooner than later.
